There are easily over 1,000 cleaning companies in Singapore today, and guess what? All, if not most of them claim to provide professional cleaning services. But how do you go about hiring a cleaning company that’s right for you or your company? What do you have to look out for in some of the drop pits? Does it feel like you’re trying to find a needle in a haystack?
Here are some guidelines and considerations that should help you make a more informed decision about the cleaning company you choose to hire.
Do your research
Spend some time thinking about your needs:
- What services do you require? Office cleaning only? Office cleaning with pantry and tea lady services?
- How often should the services be provided? Day, week or month?
- Do you need any additional or specialized services such as dusting or high-pressure jet cleaning?
- Step 2: Time for pre-screening
- Pre-select your top three cleaning companies. From there, be sure to call them for a face-to-face meeting and a tour of their facility. It’s one thing to ask for quotes via email, but when it comes to the final selection of a cleaning company, it’s better to have a face-to-face meeting.
Ask the right questions
During your face-to-face meeting with the cleaning company representatives, be sure to ask about their time in business, the cleaning techniques used, the equipment available and last but not least, the availability of labor. Barriers to entry into the cleaning industry are quite low, which means that you have to be very diligent in asking the right questions to ensure that the cleaning company can deliver.
Get to know your people
The cleaning business is a people business, so be specific about your cleaning equipment requirements. Do you need to do heavy lifting? Do you need to provide tea lady services? Is it enough for the cleaner to be able to speak a language other than English, or do you need a cleaner who is fairly fluent in English?
What if the assigned cleaner is on sick leave or annual leave? Will the company be able to provide “breakdown coverage,” i.e., place a temporary cleaner at your workplace to minimize disruption of service in a reasonable amount of time?
And don’t forget to ask if the cleaners have attended at least one module of the EC WSQ Framework or the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Certificate of Cleaning Operations Skills. This is a mandatory requirement for cleaning personnel in Singapore.
You must also ensure that your pre-selected cleaning company has a valid NEA Cleaning License to operate legally in the Singapore context.
Is it about money?
Most buyers of services make the mistake of asking for the price first and base their decision solely on this. Don’t misunderstand us. Price is an important consideration, but if you want to be sure you are getting what you are paying for in terms of other intangibles such as reliability of service, skilled and professional labor, etc., then make sure you work through steps 1 through 4 first. That way, when you get to Step 5, you will have a clearer and more informed decision about the service provider of your choice and that you are getting the right value for your money!
